Good fat?

Did you hear the news story about brown fat today?  Although it was previously thought that only infants had brown fat, a new article in The New England Journal of Medicine indicates that nearly all adults have some amount of this brown fat which is activated by cold weather.  There is some really interesting research about how to convert fat in the human body to brown fat which consumes calories and generates heat.  Dr. C. Ronald Kahn, head of the section on obesity and hormone action at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston is quoted in this article.   After you read this, you might consider lowering the temperature in your office a few degrees!

The new study highlighting the rise in childhood obesity is concerning.  I can only assume that we will see more information in future months about an associated type 2 diabetes rise in the childhood population.  On Wednesday April 8th , on National Public Radio (NPR), The Diane Rehm Show is going to explore “the problem of childhood obesity in the U.S.”

Study finds 1 in 5 obese among 4-year-olds:  http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iWYxFm-xYioKQmzsZjCWRKWfNbiwD97D9NB00

Cure Thrift Shop – NYC

I was wandering through the streets of East Village in NYC this weekend just looking for somewhere fun to stop when a sign caught my eye.  The Cure Thrift Shop.  What a cute shop…full of great finds.  And ALL of the proceeds benefit the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation.  I enjoyed meeting the owners, Liz and Marty Wolff and hearing the story behind the shop.  Liz was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 14 years ago and decided to combine her passion for “stuff” with her personal mission to dedicate her life to finding a cure for diabetes.  Since opening last summer, The Cure Thrift Shop has already donated $200,000 to help find a cure for Diabetes.  Wow!  The shop was featured on a news segment on NY1 last week.
